In the second meeting in series history, the Simpson College women’s soccer team fell short in a 3-1 contest at Wisconsin-Eau Claire Saturday. Freshman Maddie Hays tied the match for the Storm in the 43rd minute, but that would be all the offense they could muster. Junior Abby Cozzoni’s 58th-minute goal was the difference in a 1-0 victory for Simpson College women’s soccer at Wisconsin-River Falls on Sunday. The Storm ended the weekend with a 4-2-1 record, and play today hosting Augustana at 5pm.
Two second half goals by Simpson College men’s soccer was enough to force a 2-2 tie with Wisconsin-Platteville on Saturday. Sophomore Ronaldo Ordaz Zambrano scored his first goal of his career in the 83rd minute, then senior Enrique Idehen tallied his second netter of the season with 40 seconds left to push the contest into overtime. The Storm are now 2-3-1, and next play Saturday at Knox.
The Simpson College women’s tennis team dropped a 5-4 match to Central after the Dutch swept doubles play on Saturday. Anna Wanek, Emily King, Megan Grubb, and Bella Tranquilino all won in singles play, but the Dutch swept doubles play to pick up the win. The Storm then played Truman in non-conference on Sunday, falling 7-2. Wanek won in singles play, while the duo of Wanek and King won in doubles for the Storm’s only wins on the day. Simpson is now 2-3 overall, and travel to Whitewater, Wisconsin for a weekend slate of contests.
The Simpson College men’s tennis team opened its season on the road at St. Ambrose, falling 5-4 to the Fighting Bees. Peter Walkwitz, Ethan Humble, and Adam Velazquez picked up singles wins, but the duo of Walkwitz and Humble were the lone doubles winners for the Storm to fall just short. The Storm will compete in the American Rivers Conference Individual Tournament Friday and Saturday in Decorah.
The Storm volleyball squad went 0-4 at their tournament Friday and Saturday in LaCrosse. The Storm fell to LaCrosse, Stevens-Point, Hamline, and Elmhurst all 3-0. Junior Jessica Jacobs was named to the All-Tournament team after tallying 32 kills through the four matches. American Rivers Conference action resumes today for Simpson with a road contest at Luther.
Freshman Madeline Streicher shot a 173 to tie for sixth for her fourth straight top-six placing to begin the season as Simpson College women’s golf took home fifth in the Luther Invitational on Sunday. The Storm host their own invitational tomorrow at the Indianola Country Club at 10am.
