State legislators are gathering Tuesday for a special session related to the redistricting process.
Due to delays in the 2020 census, the Iowa Supreme Court has allowed lawmakers to approve new legislative maps for federal and state districts by December 1st. State Senator Ken Rozenboom says the first round of maps were drawn by the non-partisan Legislative Services Agency, and will be up for a yes-or-no vote this Tuesday. If rejected, new maps will be unveiled over the next 30-to-45 days, and legislators can again vote yes-or-no on the process. If rejected a second time, lawmakers could make amendments to maps before approval.
Rozenboom would not unveil his plans on how he intends to vote on the first set of maps until he gathered with fellow senators this week. His potentially new district in the first draft would take Pella and many of his southern counties out, and instead, cover all of Jasper County and portions of Poweshiek along with his home county of Mahaska.
