The Simpson Storm football squad played even with Dubuque in nearly every offensive and defensive category Saturday except for one giant outlier as the Storm threw six interceptions in a 41-28 loss to the Spartans as heard live on 94.3 KNIA.
After a scoreless first, the Spartans and Storm traded blows in the second quarter with Dubuque scoring on a pair of long plays, and Brett Bobinet connecting with Joe McNally on a pair of touchdowns to keep the score even at 14 at the break. After a Storm miscue running into a punter on the first drive of the second half, Dubuque scored to take the lead that would hold until the end of the game, and then immediately capitalized on another turnover to take a 28-14 lead. The Storm got within a score as the third quarter ticked away on a Hunter Ogle rushing touchdown, but Dubuque scored 58 seconds later, then scored on another pick-6 taking a three score lead and a late Storm touchdown cut it down to the final tally.
Storm head coach Matt Jeter tells KNIA Sports the lack of the Storm running game on the day led to the squad forcing things in the passing game, and you simply can’t turn the ball over that much and expect to win.
Austin Bell ended with six receptions for 111 yards, while Bobinet threw for 254 yards as the Storm outgained the Spartans 398-378 despite the loss and numerous turnovers. The Storm are now 1-6 on the season, and return to Buxton Stadium this Saturday hosting Buena Vista for homecoming.
