Fall really hasn’t been felt yet in south central Iowa. State Climatologist Justin Glisan says the autumn season has started as one of the warmest on record, especially with the warm transition from the end of summer into what has remained a mild October. Glisan believes it’s not all bad news — he says those involved in many outdoor activities have likely enjoyed the temperatures in the 70s, and the lack of frost or freeze in the state has extended the growing season. While the spread of drought has slowed considerably recently, Glisan says the lack of frequent thunderstorm activity was the root cause of significantly dry conditions this summer.
