PCM’s football squad finished the season with a 5-5 record, and their best win of the season was in their first round playoff game against Clarinda.
Going into the game, the Mustangs finished the regular season with a 4-4 record and a 3-2 record in Class 2A District 7 play. This was the first time the two teams met in the playoffs since the 2005 state quarterfinal. This game definitely lived up to the hype. PCM got the scoring started with a 66-yard touchdown run from Aiden Anderson following a Matt Rosonke interception. On the very next drive, Clarinda responded with a 60-yard touchdown pass from Wyatt Schmitt to Marshall Durfey to tie the game at seven. After the two teams traded missed field goals, the score remained tied at the half.
Clarinda struck first in the second half with Tadyn Brown scoring on a nine-yard run after he tossed a 54-yard completion on a halfback pass. However, Clarinda would miss the extra point, making the score 13-7. Three offensive plays later, Carson Vandelune connected with Jacob Eslinger on what would be the play of the year for PCM.
Eslinger’s touchdown plus the Tyler Kuecker extra point made the score 14-13. PCM had the opportunity to extend the lead, but Kaden Hale fumbled on the five-yard line. After the two teams traded punts, Clarinda was faced with a fourth down and six at the PCM 39-yard line.
A first-down run from Anderson on the ensuing drive iced the game for PCM. The Mustangs won the game 14-13 and moved on to the next round of the playoffs. PCM lost in the second round of the postseason to Williamsburg.
