The Pella City Council will discuss several topics during policy and planning Tuesday, including the process for new precinct boundaries in the city limits.

Cities with populations greater than 3,500 must review precinct/ward boundaries after each decennial census to verify that each precinct has equivalent populations; the 2020 census resulted in a population increase of 112 for Pella, from 10,352 in 2010 to 10,464 in 2020.

Dividing the 2020 population of 10,464 by four precincts equals an ideal ward population of 2,616, according to a memo released by City Administration, and state law permits a maximum allowable variation of 10%.

No formal action will be taken, but a draft of a proposed ordinance and the new borders (see map above) will be discussed during this week’s Pella City Council meeting, which begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Pella Public Safety Complex and can be viewed online: https://join.me/CityofPella
