The Simpson College athletic department had both fall and winter sports in action over the weekend, including postseason success in cross country.
The Storm men cross country team placed 7th out of 30 teams in the midwest regional in Rock Island, Illinois Saturday, with runners Harry Dudley and Spencer Moon advancing to the D-III National Championships after career best runs. This year’s championships are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 20 at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky.
The Storm women had a 9th place finish out of 27 teams at the midwest regional, led by Cat Lucht with a 43rd place finish.
The Simpson College wrestling team was one of 41 teams to compete at the Grand View Open on Saturday. The Storm sent 16 wrestlers to the tournament and were led by Chris Martinez’ runner-up finish in the 141 bracket of the freshman/sophomore division.
The #6 Storm women’s basketball team defeated Gustavus Adolphus in their season opener on Friday evening 85-61, dominating from the start and holding a 53-34 halftime lead. Jenna Taylor had 22 points and 14 rebounds.
The Storm men’s basketball team fell to Fontbonne Friday evening in their opener 68-61, then fell again on Saturday to Westminster on Saturday in a nailbiter 76-74. The Storm men fell behind by 13 at the half against Fontbonne and mounted a furious comeback, but fell just short in the second half. Andrew Curran had 12 points to lead the squad. Chris Honz had 20 points to lead the team against Westminster as they battled back and forth, but could not hold on to a slim halftime advantage. The Storm are in action tonight against Faith Baptist Bible College.
