A Mason City man faces felony charges after an incident in Marion County Friday. Around 2:00 p.m., a state conservation officer was driving on County Highway G40 near Pleasantville when he noticed a man hunting without any blaze orange. The officer pulled into a driveway and witnessed the man, identified as 64-year-old David Lee Schulte, walking through the field and carrying a gun.
Schulte walked behind several buildings, where the officer made contact with him. At this time, Schulte was no longer carrying the firearm. The officer had previous interactions with Schulte, and knew him to be a convicted felon. The officer asked to see Schulte’s hunting license, and Schulte allegedly stated he was a felon carrying a pellet gun. When the officer asked to see the gun in the field, Schulte admitted it was a shotgun. Schulte was also found to have shotgun shells and a loaded rifle magazine.
Schulte was taken into custody and charged with felon in possession of a firearm, a Class D felony. A $5,000 cash bond was posted, and a preliminary hearing will be held November 19th.
