The Pella City Council discussed several topics during policy and planning Tuesday, including the process for new precinct boundaries in the city limits.
City Clerk Mandy Smith says cities with populations greater than 3,500 must review precinct/ward boundaries after each decennial census to verify that each precinct has equivalent populations; the 2020 census resulted in an increase of 112 for Pella, from 10,352 in 2010 to 10,464 in 2020.
Dividing the 2020 number by four precincts equals an ideal ward population of 2,616, according to a memo released by City Administration, and state law permits a maximum allowable variation of 10%.
The map will be under consideration at the December 7th meeting.
