Central College wrestling seniors Shandon Akeo and Rob Areyano were listed in the first regular season National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III rankings, released late Friday night.
Akeo was No. 10 in the preseason at 133 pounds but has moved down to 125 pounds where he remains No. 10. He is 9-0 on the season, winning five of his nine matches with bonus points. He was the bracket champion at the Pointer Open. Akeo is 1-0 against ranked opponents after beating No. 4 Alex Friddle of Coe College in an 11-0 major decision in a dual last Thursday.
Areyano slots in at No. 11 at 149 pounds in his first appearance in the rankings. He is 9-2 on the season, winning five times by fall. His only losses were against a Division II opponent in overtime and against the No. 8 wrestler from North Central College (Ill.), Alex Villar, in a 9-3 decision.
As a team, Central is 3-2. They have wins over a trio of Pennsylvania schools, including Division II East Stroudsburg University. The two Dutch losses are against No. 7 Coe College and No. 10 Johnson & Wales University (R.I.).
Next on Central’s calendar is a dual at Augustana College (Ill.) on Thursday, December 2 at 8 p.m.
