For any Iowans looking to put up some last minute holiday decorations, the Indianola Fire Department has several safety tips for residents wishing to put up lights or displays. Aaron Hurt with the fire department tells KNIA News you should be particular with the type of decorations you choose to put up.
“We want to be careful with the holiday decorations and choose those that are flame resistant or flame retardant, chose lights that are either outdoor or indoor lights and use them appropriately, replace any loose or broken cords or light bulbs, and make sure that they are fitted in with the natural cord, that is a common mistake that can start a fire.”
Hurt also said that it is important to read the instructions provided by the manufacturer, as they will often have safety information included and he recommends you follow those instructions.
