Both Pella basketball teams led from start to finish in doubleheader sweep over Oskaloosa last night as heard live on the KRLS2 stream at www.kniakrls.com.  The class 4A #11 girls started the evening with a 78-37 blowout, while the 3A #4 boys finished it off with an ugly-at-times 64-47 victory.

Pella’s girls bolted out to an 11-0 start and forced 13 first quarter turnovers as they built a 28-6 lead in the first eight minutes.  Senior guard Anna Vander Waal scored 12 of her game high 19 points in that first frame, and played a pivotal role on the defensive end.

“One of our goals was to bring up the intensity and lots of ball pressure, and for sure we got tons of steals and caused lots of turnovers”, Vander Waal said.  “That was super encouraging for us.”

Kylie Tauke (13) and Anna Childerston (11) were also in double figures for the Dutch, who improve to 7-2 overall and are 3-1 in the Little Hawkeye Conference.

Like the girls, Pella’s boys got off to a hot start with an 8-0 lead early and a 16-3 advantage after the first quarter.  But it was topsy-turvy from there, with the Indians outscoring the Dutch 9-7 in the second quarter before Pella scored 19 points in the third and 22 in the fourth, including 9-of-9 from the free throw line down the stretch.

Noah Allen drilled five three pointers and scored 19 points, and Karl Miller chipped in 13 as Pella ups it mark to 6-2 and 3-1 in the LHC.

Both Dutch squads hit the road Friday night to Dallas Center-Grimes to take on the #6 Mustang girls and the top-ranked DCG boys.
