Another winter storm is set to impact the state of Iowa, and heavy snow is becoming more likely locally.
According to the National Weather Service, widespread totals between four to seven inches are likely in Marion and Warren Counties, with amounts as high as ten inches possible depending on the track of the overall system (see map above).
Snow will start in south central Iowa by noon Friday, with the heaviest amounts falling in the late afternoon through the evening. Travel will be at its worst during the evening commute through early Saturday morning. Several activities scheduled Friday have been moved up to Thursday, and schools might dismiss early Friday afternoon.
Wind gusts up to 25 MPH will cause visibility issues and some drifting as well. Cooler conditions will follow this weekend with highs in the 20s and overnight lows in the single digits, but not to the dangerous levels experienced earlier this month. A bounce back into the 30s is expected by Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and early next week.
