A major winter storm impacted central Iowa to end last week, with most in Marion and Warren Counties receiving between 8-12″ of snow Friday afternoon through Saturday morning.

At all three KNIA/KRLS studios in Pella, Knoxville, and Indianola, 9-10 inches of drifting snow was measured. Travel was not advised along many area highways by the Iowa DOT Saturday morning, and multiple events and activities were cancelled heading into the weekend.

A short-term warm up is expected as highs warm up to near 40 by Tuesday afternoon. But the mild air will be short-lived, as dangerous, arctic air looms in the long-term forecast, according to the National Weather Service. Air temperatures well below zero are expected Wednesday and Thursday night, and wind chill values will likely stay below zero from Wednesday evening through Friday afternoon.

Stay tuned to KNIA/KRLS for the latest winter weather information.
