The Simpson Storm men’s basketball team ended a months long losing streak Saturday, taking down Luther 75-61, while the 5th ranked Storm women continued to dominate conference play with a blowout 90-66 win.
The Storm men went on several runs throughout the first half but still found themselves trailing at halftime 35-34 due to the Norse shooting 9-17 from long range adn 50% from the field. The Storm defense picked up in the second half however, allowing only 2-14 from beyond the arc and shutting down the Norse top scorers as they gradually built an insurmountable lead. The Storm were led by Andrew Curran scoring 26, Tajen Ross scoring 20, and Chris Honz contributing 18.
The Storm women dropped another 50-point half to start the first 20 minutes of their contest, but gave up 41 points to Luther to keep the Norse in the ballgame. The pace picked up in the third quarter however, as the Storm outscored the Norse 23-9 to build a big lead they would not relinquish. Assistant Coach Moran Lonning tells KNIA Sports the halftime adjustments made by the coaching staff and the players were a big reason why the Storm were able to pull away, and she credits the athletes for being able to implement the changes. Simpson had five players in double figures, with Jenna Taylor and Regan Freland leading the way with 15 points each.
The Storm men are now 5-16 overall and 2-10 in conference play, while the women are 19-1 and 11-0. Both teams next play Wednesday at Buena Vista.
