The Pella Police Department will soon have an active K-9 unit. While Officer Ellie is getting her training now, her handler Officer Hunter Boertje will begin his training by the end of this month, according to Captain Paul Haase. The goal is to have both in active duty this spring ahead of Tulip Time. Haase says Ellie’s purpose will be twofold — tracking and narcotics assistance on the law enforcement side, and as an educational resource for all residents. Haase is thankful for the support of the community in fully funding this project that will expand the resources of the Pella Police Department.
