While the three main population areas covered by KNIA/KRLS (Pella, Knoxville, and Indianola) were never in a warning, many nearby communities were impacted by significant tornadoes Saturday afternoon and evening.

The KNIA/KRLS Severe Weather Action Team was on the air for five different tornado warnings and an additional severe thunderstorm warning in Marion and Warren Counties from 4:45 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.; multiple for a long-track tornado that started in southwest Iowa and caused significant damage in Norwalk, Pleasant Hill, and Winterset, and for another two for a tornadic storm that caused issues near Chariton and crossed into southern Marion County. Multiple fatalities were reported near Winterset.

Nine KNIA/KRLS Staff Members provided coverage throughout the evening, with several updates coming in from Weatherology meteorologists as particularly dangerous warnings were issued.

The KNIA/KRLS Severe Weather Action Team is on the air for any severe thunderstorm or tornado warning for any portion of Marion and Warren Counties, with backup generators ensuring the coverage stays on if the power goes out.
