The City of Knoxville is offering an opportunity for downtown street cafes as a part of the downtown revitalization program. Knoxville Economic Development Director Glenn Lyons spoke with KNIA/KRLS News about the program.

“Restaurant owners that have angle parking in front of their establishments can apply to convert those into what we are calling street cafes. Our sidewalks downtown are not wide enough to put cafes on them so we have to take a couple of parking spaces to make that happen. There may be eight restaurants that would be eligible; I don’t know how many we will get, perhaps two or three the first year and if they are successful we could see more in the future.
