(Edit: This meet has been canceled)

The outdoor track season begins for Norwalk’s track and field squads as they will compete at Simpson College today.

The Warriors will compete at the Simpson College Coed High School Classic for the first time since 2019 after the last two meets were canceled. Norwalk will have state qualifiers on both squads returning to compete at a high level this season. On the boys’ side, Ben Hanson and Grant Miller will be returning. Hanson qualified for the 800 meter run for Norwalk last season while Miller went for the 110 meter hurdles. Boys’ Coach Matt Ramthun says that he is excited to see how his team does against stiff competition.

“Great competition there. We see a lot of the big schools there and it’s a coed meet so we get to watch the girls’ team as well and get some younger guys in. Get some experience outside, so we’re excited.”

On the girls’ side, 400 meter dash state champion Claire Farrell is returning. Farrell also qualified for state in the 100 and 200 meter dashes last year. Breelie Mauro qualified for the 800 meter run last season. Other state qualifiers returning also include Kady Vandermark in the shot put and discus as well as Marin Randall, who qualified in the long jump. Girls’ Coach Charity Campbell likes competing at this event because she gets a chance to see what her team is capable of.

“We enjoy that meet. I like that meet mostly because we can have a lot of athletes involved. You can have two relays each event, so we get to see what our athletes can do.”

The Simpson College Coed High School Classic gets underway at 4:00 PM.
