The Pella Rural Fire Department battled flames at a fully-engulfed barn east of Pella early Wednesday morning.

Pella Fire Chief Randy Bogaard says crews responded to a call at 1670 Cordova Avenue at approximately 2 a.m. He says what made the scene hard were muddy roads that made for more difficult transportation of water, winds that fueled flames and threatened the nearby home, and the material of the barn, because it was an older, wooden structure.

Bogaard says while damaged, a nearby home and garage were saved from destruction, but the barn was a total loss.

No injuries were reported.
