The Indianola City Council received a presentation regarding the sidewalks on the Indianola Square Reconstruction Project at their meeting Monday, specifically referring to the slanted edge on the sidewalks leading to the street. Interim City Manager Charlie Dissell tells KNIA News the city and engineers have to be aware of many factors when implementing sidewalks.

“This project and the sidewalk is dictated by federal ADA standards, that is the American Disabilities Act. Those regulations have been in place for some time now, but that really drove a lot of what we had to do with the sidewalk. That includes slopes on the sidewalk, cross slopes, runs on the slopes, on what those numbers have to be. From there we also have to look at stormwater, and how the stormwater flows through the streets on the square, and make sure we are not engineering anything that in a big rain event would put water into peoples buildings, because as a city we just cannot do that frankly.”

Dissell also said the city council meeting was recorded and there is video to go back and review if anyone has any additional questions, and the council gave direction to city and construction staff to continue Phase 2 as planned. For more information, tune in to today’s Let’s Talk Indianola.
