After dropping their first match of the season on Monday, the Pella Christian boys tennis team was swept 9-0 by Grinnell on Tuesday. Pella Christian struggled in the match as #1 singles player Alejo Marcon was the lone Eagle to win more than two games in a set. Marcon lost the first set 6-4, before forcing a tiebreaking set with 7-5 win in set 2 over Grinnell’s Calvin Jaworski but fell 11-9 for the tough loss. Pella Christian’s next boys tennis match is Thursday when they host crosstown rival Pella at 4:15 p.m.

The Eagles track and field team traveled to Davis County yesterday and got just 17 events in before the meet was canceled due to lightning. Despite the meet being cut short, the Eagles were well represented on the individual leaderboards. Drew Geetings and Cara Veenstra won the boys and girls high jump event, while Trevor Veenstra won the shot put. Long jumper Luke Nikkel and the girls sprint medley relay team of Makayla Nikkel, Faith Kacmarynski, Cara Veenstra, and Amelia Boender brought home 2nd place finishes. The boys sprint medley relay team of Geetings, Peyton Ritzert, Luke Nikkel, and Cooper Spronk took third place in the event. The boys 4×800 meter relay team of Danny, Andringa, Brant Vander Hart, Kaden Van Wyngarden, and Ryan Natelborg also finished third. Discus thrower Tobey Steen, high jumper Landon Fransman, and long jumper Makayla Nikkel nabbed third place finishes. Geetings said that while the weather hasn’t been ideal this year, it’s not an excuse because it’s been the same for all the athletes competing.

“I know for me personally in the high jump, this windy and cold weather isn’t quite ideal. But just knowing that everybody else has to compete in the same weather conditions as I do and not letting that affect me mentally is something that I think is really important.”

Pella Christian’s next track and field meet is scheduled for Thursday at North Mahaska beginning at 4:30 p.m.

The Class 1A #8 ranked Pella Christian girls tennis team never got to step foot on the court Tuesday against Grinnell, as the soggy weather conditions forced the match to be postponed. Grinnell traveled to Eagle Lane, but the rain forced the match to be canceled. The Eagles are scheduled to return to action on Thursday, as they make the short drive across town to take on Pella at 4:15 p.m.
