blake-veenstra

Pella Christian track and field alumni Blake Veenstra is dominating in his second season at Hawkeye Community College. Veenstra was named the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week, after setting personal best marks in the discus and hammer throws at the WPU Statesman Invite at William Penn University. His discus throw went 52.43 meters which won him the event, and his hammer throw of 48.01 meters netted him a third-place finish. Veenstra also won the shot put at the WPU Statesman Invite with a throw of 15.63 meters.

The former Eagle currently ranked fourth in the National Junior College Athlete Association in the shot put and discus, and 11th in the hammer throw. Veenstra will look to improve on those marks Saturday at the Mustang Open at Mt. Mercy College.

Following their first conference win of the season against Grinnell on Tuesday, the Pella Christian girls soccer team will look to build on that tonight as they welcome Chariton to Eagle Lane.

The Eagles win Tuesday snapped their three-game losing streak, and matched their win total in the Little Hawkeye Conference from last season. Following the win over Grinnell, Senior Sarah Gritters said the win boosted the spirits of the team, which had been struggling in the early going.

“I would say that it just gives us a little bit more confidence in the fact that we are a good team, even though we’re still growing in all of our abilities. But, this night really gave us a chance to work together and to grow in that a little bit more, and I think that’s really awesome.”

The Pella Chrisitan girls soccer team will look to push their winning streak over Chariton to five straight tonight at 5:30 p.m.
