It was a perfect Tuesday to be outdoors and on the final scorecard for all eight Pella sports teams in action.
Overtime Thriller Clinched by Pella Boys Over Oskaloosa
No. 10 in 2A Pella edged Oskaloosa in a boys soccer matchup 4-3 that went to extra PKs Tuesday. Pella fell behind early, only to tie the match on an Austin Bone goal set up perfectly by Levi Van Dusseldorp. The road team opened the first minute of the 2nd half with a goal, and the Dutch ended up with a costly-own goal to fall behind 3-1. Pella got one back on a great header by Logan Solomon from a cross in the 53rd minute, and with only about 12 minutes left, freshman substitute Tyson Barnes sent a ball across that beat the Oskaloosa keeper and tied it 3-3. The game went to OT, but Pella could not capitalize over two extra periods, despite having the majority of the possession. In PKs, the first round of 5 shots ended tied 3-3, with Levi Van Dusseldorp hitting the winning kick and Tyler Killoren making the game-winning save. The Dutch improve to 10-1 overall and host ADM and Hudson for their home tournament Saturday morning, starting at 9 a.m. in a state quarterfinals rematch.
Pella Boys Golf Claims Oskaloosa Invitational Title
In one of their best performances of the season, the #6 in 3A Pella boys golf team claimed 1st out of 16 teams at the Oskaloosa Invitational. Will Simpson–who ranks as the 2nd best individual in Class 3A in the first rankings, shot at 69 to claim medalist honors, with Cade McGinley shooting a 79 and Ayden Gordon carding an 80 for top 15 individual finishes. The Dutch had a season best team score of 316. Pella plays again on Thursday at Moravia Invite.
Dutch Girls Golf Team Wins Home Dual with Grinnell
The Pella girls golf team had a season-best team score and some individual PR’s on Tuesday night vs. Grinnell, winning 201-248. Leading scores: Reagan VanWyk – Medalist (48), Karsyn Lyons – Runner-Up Medalist (49 PR), Olivia Hood (51), Ellie Wogen (53), and Aubrey VandeNoord (54). The Dutch girls head to Fairfield Thursday.
Pella Girls Soccer Bounces Back in Oskaloosa
After a tough stretch against ranked foes, the Pella girls soccer team flexed their muscle in Oskaloosa Tuesday in a 9-0 win. Abby Warner scored 6 goals, and Tatum Carlstone, Kaylee Van Polen, and Jillian Wright all added a tally. Haley Van Houweling had one save as the home team struggled to get by the Dutch defense. Pella improves to 6-5 and heads #4 in 1A Nevada Thursday.
Pella Boys, Girls Tennis Teams Earn 10-1 Wins Over Norwalk
The top three ranked Pella tennis teams continued their dominating regular season, with the Dutch beating both Norwalk teams 10-1.
At home, the #2 Dutch boys found singles wins from Caleb Briggs, Jack Briggs, Joshua Roozeboom, Cameron Rowe, Beau Bush, and Cashen Thompson. Pella did not drop a set in the singles rounds and only lost at #5 doubles. On the road, the #3 Pella girls faced some of their toughest competition to date against unbeaten Norwalk. Allie Singer came out on top of a very tightly battled #4 singles match, winning 7-5, 7-5. Lily VanDusseldorp fought off a second set comeback at #6 singles and finished in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. Pella’s lone loss came at #2 doubles to sisters Ava and Olivia Johnson. After dropping the first set 0-6, Amelia Poe and Allie Singer worked the second set to 3-4 before eventually losing the second set 3-6. Two Dutch victories came via third set tiebreakers: Emily Blom and Alloree Else at #1 doubles and Willa Kelpe and Demrie VanderLeest at #4 doubles. The girls head back to Warren County Thursday at Indianola.
Pella Track and Field Teams Sweep Titles at Grinnell Tigers Relays
The Pella boys and girls track and field teams both won the team races at the Grinnell Relays. The Dutch boys scored 113 points while the girls scored 122.
