The Mustangs of DCG swept both the Indianola softball and baseball teams in doublehears in Dallas Center Monday evening, softball falling 6-5 in a walkoff and 8-6, and baseball falling 9-5 and 9-6 heard live on 94.3 KNIA.
Indianola softball took several leads in game one that wouldn’t hold, scoring a run in the first and another in the fourth and fifth innings to lead 3-0, but the Mustangs scored two in the fifth to make it 3-2. Indianola answered with two in the sixth, but that score was matched by DCG to make it 5-4 going into the seventh, when DC scored two runs to get the walkoff win.
Game two again saw the Indians unable to hold on to a lead, as the teams traded runs in the first and the Indians taking a 2-1 lead in the third. DCG took a 3-2 lead in the fourth, with the Indians answering with three in the top of the fifth to again take the lead, this time at 5-3. Then the Mustangs outscored the Indians 5-1 in the final two innings to take the lead and earn the sweep. Indianola falls to 15-9, and they will next play Grinnell on Wednesday.
Indianola baseball struggled to make defensive plays in game one of their doubleheader, committing multiple errors and allowing the Mustangs to score runs on free passes to the basepaths. After trailing 5-0, the Indians scored three runs in the middle innings to seemingly get back in the contest, but DCG closed the door with multiple two-run innings to earn the win.
The Indians looked as if they had turned their fortunes around in the second game of the contest, scoring three runs in each of the third and fourth innings to take a 6-0 lead, that included a two-run home run from Brady Blake. DCG would not go away quietly however, scoring nine unanswered runs in the 5th and 6th innings including a back-to-back-to-back series of home runs that gave them the win.
The Indians fall to 17-9 on the season, and will host Grinnell on Wednesday.
