Saturday night at the Knoxville Raceway is the Mid Season Championships and the Nolan Wren Memorial. Sergeant Matthew Johnson of the Iowa National Guard is doing a fundraiser where he will run from the Iowa State Capitol to the Knoxville Raceway. Sergeant Johnson spoke with KNIA/KRLS News about how the idea came about.
“I know that Saturday is the Nolan Wren Memorial night and I was trying to think of something I could do within the night. With it being Veterans night, I decided I wanted to run and I put it out on Twitter that if I ran from the State Capitol to the Knoxville Raceway, who would support it? Within an hour, I had about a thousand dollars raised.”
Proceeds will go to Wounded Heroes and Sergeant Johnson talks about the organization.
“The great thing about Wounded Heroes is that it was founded around veterans, but it is also for the Police, EMT, and Firefighters, people who work in trauma settings. Their mission is that all heroes have wounds from their service and they focus on emotional, mental, and brain injuries.”
The run is anticipated to take over seven hours. If you are interested in supporting the run click here.
