Two area softball players were recognized for their effort on and off the diamond this summer. Tori Van Vark of Pella and Kyra Robins of Indianola were nominated for the E. Wayne Cooley “You Can” Award. It is awarded by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association in appreciation of the longtime Executive Secretary of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, E. Wayne Cooley.
The “You Can” Award illustrates the qualities of determination, character and the values of Pursuing Victory With Honor.

Tori Van Vark, Pella – Nominated by Katie Gravert, Head Coach
Tori Van Vark is a student athlete that Works hard with Integrity and gives No excuses. She went above and beyond to better her skills on the field during the off season. She sustained a shoulder injury halfway through the season but worked hard to get back after two weeks to help her team achieve a quality run to the finish of the season. Tori is caring, giving, and is a vital part to the Pella Softball program.
Kyra Robins, Indianola – Nominated by Stacy Evans Head Coach
If you were to draw an image of a person that is “Iowa Nice” Kyra Robins’s face would appear. She is one of the kindest most heartfelt teammates at Indianola. Kyra has been through adversity while transitioning roles in the field to include catching, third base, first base, DP, and courtesy running. These roles have given her an aspect of the game from many different views and a strong skill set to be utilized for any need. Kyra is a leader amongst her peers and encourages others to do their best and strive for more. She is a talented athlete that is strong in the classroom as well as a musical performer. She is always willing to give back to the community by providing lessons or volunteering to help at camps. Kyra is the “coachable kid” that is eager to learn but leans on feedback to improve her understanding of the game. Indianola is GIFTED to have Kyra in our community. She will continue to learn and challenge herself as her journey unfolds.
