PCM’s boys’ basketball squad put together a run to the Class 2A District 14 final with wins over Chariton and Pleasantville to claim the #9 spot on our countdown of the top sports moments for the Mustangs this past school year.
The Mustangs got out to a slow start offensively but picked up the pace at the end of the first quarter and never looked back in the 74-38 opening round win over Chariton on February 14th. PCM pulled away from the Chargers following both an intentional and technical foul that allowed Carson Vandelune to shoot four free throws. That kick started a 13-0 run by the Mustangs to end the first half and give PCM a 38-14 lead at the break. Durant Van Dyke tied a career-high with 28 points, while Vandelune was second on the team in scoring with 19.
In the second-round game, PCM knocked off Pleasantville 64-51 on February 17th, to advance to the district finals. After Pleasantville took an 8-6 lead midway through the first quarter, an alley-oop from Carson Vandelune to Matt Rosonke catapulted a 28-3 Mustangs run that made the score 34-11 at the half. Vandelune led the way offensively for PCM, scoring in 26 points, two off from his career high. Durant Van Dyke wasn’t far behind as he chipped in 23 points.
PCM ultimately fell in the district final against Class 2A’s #7 Des Moines Christian, but not before a great postseason run that sits at #9 on our countdown.
