The number six Norwalk sports story of the past school year involves the Warrior wrestling team, which qualified five individuals for the State Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in February. Three of those Norwalk qualifiers ended their season atop the Class 3A medalist podium, led by junior Maddux Borcherding-Johnson’s third-place finish in the 285-pound division.

Borcherding-Johnson, who in 2021 committed to play football at the University of Iowa, entered state as the top seed in 3A and finished the season with 30-2 record after going 4-1 with two pins in Des Moines. He lost in the semifinal round before winning a pair of hard-fought decisions in the consolation bracket, capped by a 4-2 ultimate tiebreaker win over Dowling Catholic’s Carson Hagan for third place.

Also earning state medals for Norwalk were senior Hunter Blomgren – sixth place at 220 pounds – and junior Donovan Card, who placed eighth at 132.

Blomgren won his first two matches by fall, then lost in the semifinals and came up short in two tightly-contested consolation bracket matches. He finished 17-7 on the year.

Card went 2-3 at the state meet as well, winning a pair of 5-4 decisions along the way. His final record was 31-8.

Also competing at state for the Warriors were senior Trent Harper at 126 pounds and junior Jacob McKenzie at 120. Harper picked up a 5-4 win in his first round consolation match and finished 1-2. McKenzie went 0-2.

Norwalk tied for 16th place in the large-school 3A class at state, scoring 34 total points.
