Dutch Win Again in Women’s Tennis
Stringing together consecutive American Rivers Conference wins, the Central College women’s tennis team was victorious 8-1 over Buena Vista University Monday afternoon.
Central (3-2, 2-2 conference) handed the Beavers (0-7, 0-3 conference) a 43rd straight loss in the series between the two teams. The Dutch won both doubles matches that were played and won four of the five singles matches. The Beavers only had five players and forfeited at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. Jenna Hernandez was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 3 singles and an 8-5 winner at No. 2 doubles with Alex Griggs. Griggs won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Brianna Lindstrom also won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles and Alli Kreider won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. Madi Whalen, and Jennifer Larson won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles.
The Dutch host Grand View University on Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
Central Surges to Second-Place Men’s Golf Finish
Central College got a pair of top-10 finishes and leaped four spots to place second in the 16-team Frank Wrigglesworth-Blugold Invitational Monday
The host University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire put three players in the top five and cruised to the 36-hole title with 296-291—587. Central followed at 304-298—602, slipping past Bethel University (Minn.) which was third at 297-306—603.
Competing at the par-71 Eau Claire Golf and Country Club, Harold Dobernecker tied for fourth individually with 72-75—157 while Kyle Gabos had Central’s best round of the day to close at 76-73—149, tying for seventh.
Cole McGriff tied for 11th at 75-76—151 and Jacob Moffett made a big jump, shooting 81-74—155 while Lucas Wendel had 82-78—160. Playing as an at-large entrant, Blake Wynn shot 77-81—158.
The Dutch are off until Oct. 3-4 when they play host to the Central Fall Classic, played at the par-72 Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City. Central was first in a 13-team field on the same course a year ago. Blasi expects 16 teams in this year’s field, including several from the American Rivers and Midwest conferences.
Central College’s Cahill, Lunning Earn Weekly League Honors
Central College women’s soccer midfielder Paige Cahill and women’s golfer Thea Lunning have been named American Rivers Conference Athlete of the Week winners for the week of September 12 to 18.
Cahill propelled the Dutch offense to 12 goals in three matches last week, scoring three goals of her own and assisting on three others. Her three assists in a 5-0 win against Monmouth College (Ill.) on Wednesday tied a school record. She had two goals in a 3-0 win over Cornell College Saturday and a third goal in a 4-0 win over Illinois College Sunday.
Central travels to Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. match.
Lunning’s seventh-place individual finish led the Dutch at the Illinois Wesleyan Fall Invitational over the weekend, recording a two-day score of 77-75—152. As a team, Central was third in the 15-team field with a score of 308-311—619.
The Dutch play at the Nebraska Wesleyan Fall Invitational in Lincoln Saturday and Sunday.
Central Holds on in Football Rankings
Central College hung on to a spot in the D3football.com Top 25, slipping to No. 24 after suffering its first loss Saturday.
The Dutch (2-1) were No. 12 a week ago but dropped a 38-35 decision to Loras College at Pella in the American Rivers Conference opener for both squads. League rival Wartburg College (3-0) made its first appearance in the rankings this season at No. 22.
Central is off this week and returns to American Rivers play with its first road game of the season Oct. 1 at Nebraska Wesleyan University.
