The night of comebacks turned into a night to rejoice for the Dutch, as Pella celebrated homecoming with a back-and-forth five set upset volleyball win (25-23, 27-29, 25-20, 14-25, 16-14) over #15 in 4A Dallas Center-Grimes Tuesday.
All five set winners came from behind before the midway point, with all of those leads at least four points. Shaky starts for the Dutch in the first and third sets were met by strong beginnings for the home team in the 2nd and 4th, only for the opposite Little Hawkeye Conference school to rally late and win.
It seemed especially dire for Pella after they were outscored 25-7 in the final 32 points of set four and fell behind 11-5 to the surging Mustangs late. But the Dutch found a long service run, and overcame a match point down 14-13 to score the final three points and win.
Senior Mia Warner tallied 20 kills and five service aces in the match, and said the result showed how far they’ve come this fall and what’s possible going forward.
FULL INTERVIEW WITH WARNER:
Bryn Higginbotham added 11 kills and two solo blocks, and Ellie Schmitz and Jasmine Namminga each had nine kills. Kyli Hiemstra had four service aces, and Katie Pollock, Katie Scheckel, and Alaina Hartke each had three.
Pella improves to 10-8 overall and 2-2 in conference action, and are off until a trip to Grinnell on Tuesday, September 27th.
A tense final few points for @PellaVB as they earned a Homecoming upset over #15 in 4A DCG. #iahsvb
