Seniors Donovan Card, Jack Brown and Breelie Mauro each placed in the top 20 Thursday as the Norwalk boys finished second and the girls were 20th at the Fort Dodge Cross Country Invitational. The meet was held at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course – longtime site of the State Cross Country Championships – and featured a field of 27 boys teams and 24 girls teams.
Class 4A top-ranked Dowling Catholic won the boys’ half of the meet with a score of 55 while 2nd-ranked Norwalk edged Johnston by five points, 128-133, for second place. The Warriors’ five scoring runners finished within a span of just 28 seconds, led by Card in 15th place (16:07) and Brown in 16th (16:08). Will Chase finished 24th, Noah Buhrow was 35th and Teegan Kralik 38th out of 224 runners.
Ankeny Centennial was the girls team champion with a score of 118 and Norwalk was 20th with a 551. Mauro had another strong race to lead the Warriors, placing 18th in 19:22. Maya Butler finished 110th, followed by Sara Beckwith in 157th, Quinn Tice 170th, and Andie Davitt 174th.
Norwalk’s next race is Monday’s Little Hawkeye Conference Coed Meet at Dallas Center’s Burnett Recreational Complex. The meet will start at 4:30 p.m.
