As part of Fire Prevention Week, the Pella Fire Department is going to area schools and inviting students to the fire station to help educate them about how to keep themselves safe if a fire does occur.

Pella Fire Chief Randy Bogaard says it’s especially important for elementary-aged students to understand that firefighters are there to help — in a fire, it can be scary for children to see a fully-equipped person running into a structure they may be trapped in.

Bogaard says it’s also important for parents to have a plan in place to evacuate a home and a safe place to go in case of a fire.
