The PCM football team endured their second heartbreaking one-point loss of the season Friday night, this time falling 28-27 in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs to Clear Lake heard live on the KRLS3 Stream.
The Mustangs grabbed the early momentum in the game, as Augie Stock connected with Gavin Fenton on a 33-yard pass, which led to a 12-yard touchdown run by Stock. The extra point was blocked after that first touchdown, which came back to haunt PCM late in the game. At that point however, the Mustangs seemed to be in control of the game after Gavin Van Gorp put PCM up 13-0 with an 11-yard rushing touchdown.
Clear Lake flipped the momentum in the second quarter with a pair of rushing touchdowns to take a 14-13 lead with 4:44 left in the first half, but the Mustangs responded with a 45-yard touchdown pass from Stock to Jacob Wendt to regain the lead at 20-14. An Adrain Robbins interception set PCM up for another Stock 1-yard touchdown run to take a 27-14 lead into halftime.
Despite having the momentum at halftime, PCM lost it on their first drive of the second half, as Clear Lake returned an interception for a touchdown to pull back within six. The Lions regained the lead at 28-27 on a rushing touchdown with 3:21 left in the third quarter. While they had chances in the final 15 minutes, the Mustangs were unable to convert on those chances, and an interception with just under two minutes left in the game sealed PCM’s season.
The Mustangs ended the season with a 5-4 overall record and says goodbye to 12 seniors.
