Fall colors locally are nearing the end of their peak in South Central Iowa. According to the most recent Iowa DNR Report, oaks are at their peak, with an array of colors. White oaks are showing deep red and purple and red oaks are turning deep red to brown. Hard maples are showing orange and burgundy. Some bottomland silver maple and cottonwood are still showing green and bright yellow; but most have already lost their leaves. Ultimately, the Iowa DNR says colors are great this week, but will slow down soon.
