PCM was swept by Nevada Friday night in their Heart of Iowa Conference opening basketball doubleheader, with the girls falling 43-35 and the boys 63-53.
The Mustangs girls squad was nearly even with the Cubs for three quarters in the game, but a big second quarter for Nevada was the difference in the contest. Both teams scored eight points in the first quarter, and PCM outscored the Cubs 20-18 in the second half, but Nevada’s 17-7 advantage in the second quarter was too much for the Mustangs as they fell to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in league play. Addison Steenhoek scored 14 points in the loss to lead all scorers, and Tori Lindsay added nine points.
In the nightcap of the doubleheader, the PCM boys fell behind in the first half and couldn’t make up the difference the rest of the way. The Mustangs outscored the Cubs 15-9 in the third quarter, but Nevada had the advantage in the other three periods 16-10, 25-17, and 13-11 to drop PCM’s record to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference. Jacob Wendt led the Mustangs in scoring with 25 points, connecting on nine of his 13 shots from the field and three of his four three point attempts. Grant Van Veen and Gavin Van Gorp also were in double figures, with Van Veen scoring 15 points and Van Gorp adding 11.
Both the PCM boys and girls basketball teams are back in action Monday for a non-conference doubleheader at Pella Christian.
