It was the first ever dual meet for the Pella girls and a strong night on the mat for the Dutch boys wrestlers as they competed at Newton Tuesday.
The Pella girls fell 36-28, while the Dutch boys won both matches against the hosting Cardinals (51-24) and Clarke (54-21). For the girls, it was history for their first ever head-to-head competition, according to Head Coach Adam Hale.
“Things ultimately came down to the last match which I feel is a great spot to be against a team that is so well established, especially considering we were down a couple of wrestlers.”
Emmalee Spurgeon picked up the first win in conference competition in the program’s history with her Major Decision. Elaine Babcock and Isabella Smith both picked up victories by fall.
On the other mats, the Pella boys swept the competition to move to 9-2 in the head-to-head season. Ranked wrestlers Damion Clark (132), Peyton Ritzert (145), and Jackson Van Kley (170) were among those who won twice. Rex Rhamy (138) and Ty Halverson (160) also nabbed a pair of Dutch victories. Pella heads to the South Tama Dual Tournament Saturday for boys wrestling, while the girls are back in action the same day at Ankeny Centennial.
