The PCM basketball teams split their Heart of Iowa Conference doubleheader at West Marshall Friday night, the boys winning 40-35 while the girls fell 69-25.

The Mustangs’ boys squad was about as consistent as can be on the offensive end of the floor, averaging 10 points per quarter and have quarter scores of 10, 8, 10, 12. Defensively, PCM held West Marshall to single digit scoring in the first three quarters and only allowed 20 total points through that same timespan. Gavin VanGorp was the top scorer for the Mustangs with 14 points, while Jacob Wendt added 13 points in the win.

Facing the unbeaten #2 team in Class 3A, the PCM girls struggled to slow down the Trojans throughout the first three quarters. West Marshall scored 20 points in the first period, 21 points in the second quarter, and 23 in the third quarter, while holding the Mustangs to just 22 points total over that span. Paige Steenhoek was PCM’s lone player to reach double figure scoring with 13 points in the loss.

The Mustangs’ boys basketball team improved to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the conference, while the girls fell to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in league play. PCM has one more conference doubleheader before the holiday break, traveling to Roland-Story on Tuesday.
