Louie loves the warmth. He ain’t no winter dog!
Dr. Stephanie Deneke, a veterinarian for 17 years, the last four at the Knoxville Veterinary Clinic, provides some safety tips for dogs that face the cold weather and what owners can do for them.
She says to shorten walks in very cold weather. Consider booties for the dog’s feet as well as a sweater or coat.
“I think one of the big myths is that cats and dogs are more resistant to the cold weather than we are. As a general rule your pets typically aren’t going to be more resistant to the cold weather.”
Other suggestions are to ensure outdoor pets have insulated shelter and unfrozen drinking water. In extreme cold, even outdoor pets should stay inside. Check the dog’s paws frequently for signs of irritation or injury. Wipe down or wash your pet’s feet, legs and belly to remove packed snow, ice, salt and de-icing chemicals after walks.
