While many of their wrestlers returned to full health over break, the Pella boys couldn’t crack two of the top 24 teams in Class 3A at home with Norwalk and Johnston Thursday evening at a triangular.

The Dutch hung tough with the Warriors, who they saw extensively at the Bill Van Horn invitational just before the break, but fell 51-27. Victories for Pella included Damion Clark (132 – 4-0 decision), Jackson Van Kley (170 – pinfall), and Kieran Van Voorst (195 – pinfall). The returning T.R. Putz at 145 and Logan Bruxvoort at 160 both found pinfall wins in their debut matches for the 2022-23 season.

Pella also fell to Johnston in the triangular 66-18. Rex Rhamy (138 – pinfall) and Bruxvoort (160 – pinfall) had contested victories, while Daniel Roozenboom earned a forfeit win at 106. The Dutch boys wrestlers are next in action Saturday at Winterset.

Three Top Two Finishers for Pella at Nevada Scramble
On the road to Nevada, the Pella girls grapplers had three top two finishers in a scramble tournament, including:

Emmalee Spurgeon, 3-0 (3 falls), 1st place
Lissbeth Rosenstein, 2-0, 1st place
Serenity Turner, 3-1 (2 falls), 2nd place

Coach Adam Hale:
“Serenity Turner really looked sharp after a month away from competing. She finished well from some tough positions and picked up three nice wins and a couple pins. Lissbeth Rosenstein also made her return to the mat and won both of her matches by decision to take first in her division. She did an especially nice job from her feet where she scored eight of her ten match points. Emmalee Spurgeon went 3-0 on the day with three pins in probably the toughest bracket she’s had so far this year… all that not 48 hours after arriving back from marching in the Rose Bowl Parade.”

Pella’s girls return to the mats Saturday in Ames.
