The Simpson men’s and women’s basketball teams earned a home sweep of the Luther Norse Saturday afternoon with the women winning 70-54 and the men winning 85-72. In the women’s contest the Storm and Norse battled hard in the first quarter with the Storm taking an early 20-18 lead. Simpson would erupt in the 2nd quarter out scoring the Norse 25-7 with fast break points being the name of the game for Simpson as they scored 19 points off 12 steals to push the lead to 20 at the half 45-25.
Luther would battle back in the third 3rd quarter cutting the Simpson lead all the way down to just six points with timely scoring off the bench from Kailey Jones, who finished with 7 points, all coming in the 2nd half. Simpson’s Cassie Nash would miss time in the 3rd quarter due to injury, but came back strong in the 4th quarter to lead the Storm to victory finishing with a game high 20 points.
Next up the Storm will host Nebraska Wesleyan on Wednesday night with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m.
In the men’s game the Storm would jump out to a quick 13 point lead before timely shooting from behind three point range would bring Luther back. Luther capped off the half with a three pointer at the end of the half by Luther’s Daniel Webster which would give the Norse a one point halftime lead 39-38.
The second half seemed a mirror image of the first half as the Storm would again race out to a ten point lead just to see Luther continue to cut the lead down to single digits before timely shooting from the big men, Chris Honz and Caden Rehmeier of Simpson would put the Storm back up for good. Simpson was led on the night by Easton Darling whose persistence attacking offense and game high 23 points sealed the win for the Storm.
Like the women, the men will be back in action on Wednesday, playing host to Nebraska Wesleyan.
