It was a busy Saturday on the mats for the Indianola and Norwalk wrestling teams, including six total champions at two tournaments.

The Indianola boys placed fourth out of 10 teams at Ankeny’s Bob Sharp Invitational with 194.5 points. The Norwalk boys scored 136 points in the same tournament and placed fifth. The Indianola girls also competed at Ankeny and placed fifth out of eight teams with 78 points. The Norwalk girls wrestled at the Waukee Northwest Invitational and finished 16th with 17 points.

The Indianola and Norwalk boys squads both finished the day with two champions and 13 place-winners at Ankeny. Indianola’s champs included 2nd-ranked Bowen Downey at 120 pounds and 10th-ranked Ryan Young at 126. Both finished 3-0, combining for three pins and a technical fall.

Norwalk’s champions were 3rd-ranked Tyler Harper at 106 and top-ranked Maddux Borcherding-Johnson at 285. Harper went 3-0 with two wins by fall and Borcherding-Johnson notched his second win of the season over 2nd-ranked Jake Walker of Waverly-Shell Rock, prevailing 3-1 in sudden victory.

Indianola’s Jake Pontier and AJ Pontier both placed second at 145 and 160 pounds, respectively. Placing third for the Indians were Isaiah Kellow at 182, Carson Slorah 195 and Jaxson Boyd 285. Norwalk had four wrestlers finish fourth: Jake McKenzie at 126, Donovan Card 138, Kadan Borcherding-Johnson 145 and Harrison Tripp 195.

The Indianola girls also had two champions in Ankeny as Nina Alexander won the 120-pound bracket and Callie Chapman prevailed at 125. Both went 3-0, including Alexander’s two pins and one major decision. Andrea Taylor placed third for the Indians at 140.

At Waukee Northwest, Katelynne Liedtke led Norwalk by placing fifth at 170 pounds, going 3-1 with two pins. Alysse Ivanovich, Kamryn McWilliams and Madeline Benge all placed eighth.

Team champions at Ankeny were the Waverly-Shell Rock boys and the Ankeny girls. Cedar Falls won the girls tournament at Waukee Northwest.
