indianola-8

The Indianola boys survived a thriller in Newton Friday night on the road 52-47, while the girls put on an offensive clinic to win 73-28.

The Indians boys were down early after the first 15-9 after the Cardinals came out firing, however the Indians clamped down defensively in the second quarter allowing only six points and taking a 22-21 lead into halftime. Indianola would maintain a lead in the third, never quite pulling out of reach however, leading 39-34 after the third, and saw Newton tie the game late. Brayden Drea had all the heroics in the game to keep Indianola ahead, as he hit a clutch three late and the Indians defense held on for the victory. Drea led the team with 26 points, half the teams points.

The Indians girls had a slow start in the first, not scoring for the first several minutes as they adjusted to a stout Newton defense, but as they got comfortable the points started to pour in. Indianola led 20-7 after the first, and 33-14 at halftime. The second half was the same as the first, with nearly every Indianola player finding the scoresheet as they continued to balloon the lead to running clock.

Head coach Jeff Janssen said after the game after the last several weeks the Indians had to play through, this win was good to see.

“We focused all week on us and how do we move the basketball better, how do we rebound better, and how do we guard 1on1 better. The girls were so unselfish tonight, it was fun to watch.”

Emily Naughton had 16 points to lead all scorers.

The boys are now 12-1 on the season and 8-0 in the Little Hawkeye Conference, while the girls are 7-7 and 5-3. Both teams have a short turnaround, taking on Clear Creek-Amana today.
