It was a doubleheader split last night on Eagle Lane as the Pella Christian girls beat Newton 52-46 while the Cardinals boys stormed back from 20 points down in the second half to win 45-42. Both games were heard live on KRLS2.

P.C.’s girls jumped out to a 37-17 halftime lead as Joslyn Terpstra erupted for 13 points in the second quarter and 19 in the half.

“We’ve had some rough patches this year”, Terpstra said. “I think finally our shots were kind of falling and it was a really fun game.”

Newton clawed within five late in the game as Pella Christian shot just 6-of-18 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter, but the Eagles did just enough to put it away and improve to 4-15 on the season and 2-9 in the LHC. Terpstra finished with 26 points, Karlie Anderson added nine and Faith Kacmarynski snagged 11 rebounds.

After falling behind 6-3, the P.C. boys outscored Newton 25-3 for the rest of the first half to build a 28-9 lead at intermission. The lead stretched to 30-10 early in the third, but the Cardinals outscored J.D. Boer’s Eagles 35-12 the rest of the way for the victory.

“We’re a good basketball team, we want to be a great basketball team, and feel like we’re really close”, Boer said. “For two quarters we were there tonight and we couldn’t get there. That was my message to the team afterwards – we have to be tough enough to finish those games and you have to have a killer mentality. Tonight we did not.”

Josiah Vos scored 13 points and Jack Fancher came off the bench to grab 11 rebounds for Pella Christian, who falls to 11-6 and 6-5 in league play. Up next for both Eagle squads is a trip across town to play Pella on Friday night.
