
The Pella boys basketball team made a late charge to upend their crosstown rivals while the ranked Dutch girls were dominant in a Tulip City Showdown sweep at Pella High School Friday heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
Pella’s boys rallied for a 59-56 victory, while the girls pulled away in the second half as the #8 in 4A Dutch won 49-24.
The Eagles were in control for the majority of the boys showdown, leading by as much as nine in the 4th quarter, with Pella making a few rallies to take brief leads throughout. Down starter Roman Hugan for the stretch run, the home team still found big buckets late, including a pair of three pointers from freshman Austin Schulte to pull the game within one possession and another by Trey Van Hauen to take the final lead.
Cam Schulte finished with 13 points and 19 rebounds, Brayden Traetow added 13 points, and Van Hauen finished with 12 to lead the Dutch. Josiah Vos added 18 points and 13 boards to pace the Eagles, and Dane Geetings added 15 points for P.C.
While the P.C. girls hung tough early, Pella gradually pulled away throughout the final three quarters of the opener. Playing their 4th game in five days, the #8 in 4A Dutch girls held Pella Christian to just two points in the 2nd quarter and 15 over the final three frames. Kylie Tauke and Kennedy Van Vark led Pella with nine points, while Joslyn Terpstra scored 13 to pace the Eagles.
Pella’s girls are now 15-4 overall and 9-2 in the Little Hawkeye Conference and the Dutch boys are up to 11-7 overall and 6-6 in league play; the Eagles girls fall to 4-15 and 2-9 in the LHC and the P.C. boys drop to 11-7 and 6-6.
The Dutch are off until they host Indianola Tuesday, while the Eagles boys return to action today at Van Meter. Varsity action begins at 5:00 this evening on the road.
