Central College’s Grant Johnson (senior, Waukee, Van Meter HS) and Sam Beatty (senior, Mount Pleasant) received American Rivers Conference honors.
Johnson, a 6-foot, 10-inch forward was named the conference men’s basketball player of the week while Beatty, a men’s track and field high jumper, was tabbed as the men’s field events athlete of the week.
Johnson was cited for the second time this season after helping Central come back from a 14-point road deficit at Loras College Saturday to post a 66-56 victory in a battle for the conference’s top spot. He had 26 points on 12-of-15 shooting, along with nine rebounds and two blocks as Central improved to 14-6 overall and 9-3 in the conference. On the season, Johnson leads the league in rebounding (9.3 per game), assists (4.8) and blocks (2.4).

Beatty posted a season-best mark of 6-9.5 in winning the high jump at the Wartburg Select meet Saturday in Waverly. Beatty’s mark ranks second in the NCAA Division III this year and is tied for seventh in school history. An indoor and outdoor all-America performer, Beatty is bidding for his second national indoor meet appearance after tying for eighth nationally last year. He’s a two-time outdoor qualifier, finishing third last spring. He is a two-time outdoor conference champion and placed second in the league indoor meet last year.
This is the fourth time Beatty has received the conference honor. He’s slated to next compete at the Darren Young Classic in Grinnell Saturday.
