The PCM basketball teams earned a sweep in their final doubleheader of the season Tuesday against South Hamilton, as girls got a 58-46 upset win and the boys pulled out a 49-47 victory.
The Mustang girls proved up to the challenge early against the Class 2A #13 ranked Hawks, starting the game on a 10-0 run through the first four minutes. South Hamilton responded with a 14-7 run to cut PCM’s lead to 17-14 at the end of the first quarter, but the Mustangs 20-point second quarter pushed their advantage to 35-25 at halftime. PCM’s defense propelled them to outscore the Hawks 17-8 in the third period and helped them withstand South Hamilton winning the fourth quarter 13-6. PCM improved to 11-10 overall and 8-6 in league play with the win. Tori Lindsay followed up a career-high 26 points last Friday against Roland-Story with a 23-point performance Tuesday against South Hamilton. Addison and Sophia Steenhoek and Madie Reed all contributed eight points in the victory as well.
Playing their best basketball as of late, the PCM boys avenged their early season loss to South Hamilton. The Mustangs grabbed the early lead 11-8 after the opening period, but the Hawks responded with a 22-point outburst in the second quarter to lead 30-23 at halftime. The PCM boys locked in defensively in the third quarter limiting South Hamilton to just three points and scored 15 of their own to retake the lead 38-33 going into the final quarter. The Hawks outscored the Mustangs 14-11 in the final quarter, but PCM held on for the two-point win to improve to 7-13 overall and 6-8 in conference action. Gavin Van Gorp led the way offensively for the Mustangs with 16 points, while Grant Van Veen added 10 points in the victory.
The PCM boys return to the court Thursday in non-conference road game at East Marshall, while Tuesday marked the end of the regular season for the girls. The Mustangs girls squad begins Class 3A regional play on Saturday at Mid-Prairie.
