The Iowa Legislature is in discussions about a restructure of property taxes. State Senator Julian Garrett tells KNIA News one of the biggest issues he heard from voters during the campaign and the beginning of the session was the rise of property taxes due to the spike in housing prices.
“I think there will be some proposals to try to really make some changes and simplify property taxes. That’s a very complicated thing, if you try peek in on the law on property taxes, it’s a major challenge to figure it all out. I know there are discussions going on and we’ll see what they come up with. I fully expect there will be at least serious consideration to making some changes to property taxes.”
Garrett also said he does not serve on the committee discussing possible changes, so he will have to wait to see what the bill will do before he can say whether he will vote in favor or against.
