The PCM boys basketball team defeated West Marshall 40-31 in the opening round of Class 2A Substate action Monday night, as heard live on KNIAKRLS.com.

Knocking off the Trojans for the third time this season, it was the Mustangs’ defense the propelled them to the win. PCM held West Marshall to just six points in each of the first, third, and fourth quarters, while only being outscored in the second quarter. The Mustangs led 8-6 after the first period, but a buzzer-beating three by the Trojans pushed them in front 19-17 at halftime. After the break, PCM regained the lead and never looked back. After grabbing a 28-25 lead at the end of the third quarter, the Mustangs finished off the season sweep by winning the fourth quarter 12-6. Grant Van Veen ensured his senior season lasted at least one more game with a team-high 12 points.

PCM improved to 8-14 overall on the season and will now look to get a road upset at #2 Roland-Story Thursday in the District Semifinal game.
