Norwalk sophomore bowler Julia Palen is a state qualifier following Monday’s sixth-place finish in the Class 2A Girls State Qualifying Meet at Newton’s Cardinal Lanes.
Palen rolled scores of 171, 154 and 146 for a 471 series. By placing among the top eight individuals, she advances to the 2A Individual State Tournament set for Wednesday, February 22, at Maple Lanes in Waterloo.
Norwalk placed fourth out of eight teams in the 2A Qualifier with a total score of 2,067 pins through 15 Baker games. Team state qualifiers were Newton with 2,430 pins and Denison-Schleswig with 2,352.
In addition to Palen’s 471, the Warriors’ top three-game series performers included sophomore Ellery Racz with a 459, senior Kate Desmond’s 381 and sophomore Elivia Stout’s 377. Atto White and Addy Nielsen added totals of 329 and 321, respectively.
The Norwalk boys bowling team will compete at Cardinal Lanes today as the 2A Boys State Qualifying Meet gets underway at 10:00 a.m.
NORWALK BOYS HOST ADM; SUBSTATE BRACKETS UNVEILED
With just two regular season games remaining, the Norwalk boys basketball team moved up one spot in the Class 4A rankings on Monday and also learned their postseason bracket.
Now ranked sixth by the Iowa High School Athletic Association, the Warriors will be the top seed in Class 4A, Substate 1. Norwalk will host either Sioux City West or Sioux City North on Friday, February 24, at 7:00 p.m. The bottom half of the bracket features 10th-ranked Sioux City East, along with Johnston and Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson. The Substate 1 final is set for Tuesday, February 28, at a site to be determined.
Currently riding a 12-game winning streak, the Warriors sport a 16-3 overall record going into tonight’s home game against 10-10 ADM. The varsity contest is expected to tip off at approximately 7:45 p.m. and can be heard live on 94.3 KNIA as well as kniakrls.com. The game will be live streamed on the Warrior Productions YouTube channel.
ADM has lost two straight games, including a one-point defeat vs. Winterset and a 66-54 loss at Carroll. Norwalk won last year’s meeting with the Tigers, 60-46.
